Thin Film Technology for Modern Dosage Forms
Orodispersible Films (ODF) — also known as Oral Thin Films (OTF) — are ultra-thin, flexible polymer films loaded with an active ingredient. Placed on the tongue, they dissolve within seconds, enabling rapid absorption via the oral mucosa.
ODF can be formulated as pharmaceutical drug products or as food/nutraceutical products. The applicable regulatory pathway — pharmaceutical/CDSCO or FSSAI/nutraceutical — depends on the active ingredient, intended use and legal classification of the finished product.
This dosage form is particularly suited to paediatric, geriatric and on-the-go patient populations, and offers advantages in compliance, portability and speed of action compared to conventional tablets or capsules.
